SEMINAR:  23 NOVEMBER USING DIGITAL MEDIA EFFECTIVELY TO SPREAD YOUR MESSAGE AND GROW YOUR ORGANISATION'S REACH

Presenter:   Eleanor Parkes

Date:     Friday 23 November

Time:    9.30 am - 12.30 pm

Venue:     442 Tuam Street, Christchurch

 Social media platforms have the potential to bring in new audiences/donors and allow people to engage in new ways. In a post-truth world that seems to increasingly value the superficial getting cut through for your organisation's message on digital platforms can be difficult. This interactive workshop will share tips and techniques to tap into that potential and grow the reach of your organisation.

We will discuss how to utilise digital media platforms effectively, specifically for small to medium not-for-profit organisations, including:

- what language will best promote engagement;
- which digital platforms are best for your organisation;
- tips around use of visual material and video;
- how to use targeting and paid boosting for Facebook effectively and ethically;
- updates around current algorithms and what this means for your digital messaging.

Eleanor has a background in community development and project management in Asia and the Pacific. She enjoys collaborating with others to improve systems, liaise between groups and facilitate the development of innovative ideas.

Working for Amnesty International as a Project Specialist and Frontline Campaign Coordinator Eleanor has developed a passion for human rights and supporting vulnerable communities. She has a Master of Arts in Development Studies, is on the board of ECPAT Child Alert, co-convenes the Green Party's national Fundraising and Marketing Committee, and runs a business that offers team building for corporate groups and non-profits. Eleanor has worked in the non-profit sector for fifteen years and has experience in fundraising, youth development, managing volunteers, project management, conducting research and campaigning. https://www.beyondprofit.co.nz/about-us/

SEMINAR: 5 DECEMBER OVERSEEING the FINANCES for board members

Presenter:   Garth Nowland-Foreman

Date:     Wednesday 5 December

Time:    9.30 am - 12.30 pm

Venue:     442 Tuam Street, Christchurch

You're a board member and suddenly you find yourself somehow responsible for a non-profit or community organisation's finances. You are not accountant. You might even be intimidated by numbers. What exactly are you responsible for? Can you delegate it to the manager or leave t to the treasurer? What exactly is expected of you?

 In this practical and interactive workshop we wont make you into a financial wiz-kid, but you be much clearer on exactly what your role is in financial oversight, and the four steps you need to keep an eye on.

 How important is it to have a budget, and what does it actually involve?

What financial reports do you need as a board member and how do you read them?

What's the difference between a Statement of Performance and a Statement of Position? And what do they each tell you?

What's the difference between cash and accrual accounting and which should you use?

What is variance reporting? And why is it important?

What is the one most important accounting formula to understand?

Would I know insolvency if I fell over it? And does it matter?

What are Restricted Funds?

Do we need Reserves in a non-profit?

Do I need an audit?

What sort of financial controls should I make sure we have in place?

 You will discover the answer to these and other mysteries in a clear and understandable way, that will help you be more responsible in your exercise of financial oversight as  a board member.

 The workshop is led by Garth Nowland-Foreman, an experienced board member who is definitely not an accountant. Garth has taught in a national graduate programme in not-for-profit management and is currently a partner of L:EAD Centre for Not for Profit Leadership www.lead.org.nz.
